About Us
Black Axe Contracting was established in response to a clear need within our local community. After spending time helping friends, neighbors, and local charities with fencing, decking, and other outdoor projects, we consistently heard the same message from local tradespeople: there was a shortage of reliable digger operators available to assist with trenching, landscaping, and site preparation work.
With our skills, experience, and passion for outdoor construction, we saw an opportunity to fill that gap. We launched Black Axe Contracting to meet the growing demand—and the response has been overwhelming. Since then, we’ve been proud to support homeowners, builders, and businesses across the Wairarapa with a wide range of services, including deck construction, shed installation, stump removal, planter box builds, and site levelling, tiny home construction and many more.
Our team brings decades of collective experience to the table. This includes running a successful landscaping and design company in the UK, contributing to the development of some of New Zealand’s most prestigious golf courses, and winning the Civil Contractors New Zealand Top Excavator Operator award for the Wellington/Wairarapa region in 2023 and again in 2025.

We specialise in tight-access excavation and landscaping, offering both residential and civil contracting solutions. Based in South Wairarapa, we’re proud to be the region’s one-stop shop for all things related to outdoor construction and digger work.
Our workhorse is the Hitachi ZX17, a compact excavator with retractable and expandable tracks that allow us to access confined areas where standard equipment cannot go. Despite its size, it’s powerful enough to tackle larger-scale earthworks, and we’ve outfitted it with a range of innovative attachments designed to take on the toughest jobs with precision and efficiency.
